Summary
graves_disease is an
autoimmune_disorder causing
hyperthyroidism. Antibodies called
thyroid_stimulating_immunoglobulins activate the
tsh_receptor, making the thyroid overproduce hormone. Typical findings include
diffuse_goiter,
ophthalmopathy, and
pretibial_myxedema. Common symptoms are weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor, palpitations, and anxiety. Labs show
low_tsh with elevated
t3_t4. Imaging often shows
diffuse_radioiodine_uptake. More common in women and smokers. Complications can include atrial fibrillation, osteoporosis, and thyroid storm.
